Conference of the European Physical Society), 239-249 (European Physical Society 1982). A brief general review of the subject of optical bistability (OB) is given. 'Dispersive' OB is described to illustrate the general principles underlying the many types of OB and the history and development of the subject are outlined. Links are made between OB and other branches of physics and mathematics and the prospects and limits for OB in all-optical switching are discussed. |
