Background

The authors of Breakthrough are now working on a collection of brief pieces on each of the following topics. They will be posted here as they become available.

The Global Context

At the time of Breakthrough's simultaneous publication in the US and the USSR in 1988, the end of the Cold War still seemed a distant dream. Americans and Soviets who worked on the project will be contributing their recollections of the global political climate and how the dialogue process played into the peace movement.

"Breakthrough: How to Unite to Publish a Book"

Jerry B. Briscoe is a Professor of Political Science at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. He published this article on the Breakthrough process in APSA's journal of the profession, PS Online, in September of 1989.

Building the Team

Writing the Book

This essay by Breakthrough contributors Elena Loshchenkova and Craig S. Barnes appeared at the end of the original book and is also included in the online edition.

The Authors' Tour

After Breakthrough's publication, the Soviet authors visited cities across America to promote peace and understanding. The tour was an unprecedented opportunity for common people from opposite sides of the Iron Curtain to talk about the urgency of moving beyond war.
